Looe
About Looe
Looe is a small coastal metropolis, fishing port and civil parish in south-east Cornwall, England, with a population of 5,280 on the 2011 census. Looe is 20 miles west of Plymouth and 7 miles south of Liskeard, divided in by using the River Looe, East Looe and West Looe being related through a bridge. Looe developed as two separate cities each with MPs and its own mayor. The town centres round a small harbour and along the steep-sided valley of the River Looe which flows among East and West Looe to the ocean beside a sandy beach. Offshore to the west, opposite the stonier Hannafore Beach, lies Looe Island.
Archeological proof, inclusive of the so-called Giant's Hedge and the stone circle at Bin Down on a hill above East Looe, shows that the region round Looe become inhabited as early as a thousand BC. At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 the manor of Pendrym, which covered an awful lot of the website online of contemporary-day East Looe, turned into still held by way of William the Conqueror, as part of his own demesne, which he later devolved to the Bodgrugan family. Land throughout the river belonged to the manors of Portalla and Portbyhan.
