About Kirkwall
Kirkwall is the biggest settlement and capital of Orkney, an archipelago in the north of Scotland, and additionally the most crowded island settlement in Scotland. The town is first made reference to in Orkneyinga adventure in the year 1046 when it is recorded as the living arrangement of Rognvald Brusason the Earl of Orkney, who was executed by his uncle Thorfinn the Mighty. In 1486, King James III of Scotland raised Kirkwall to the status of an illustrious burgh. The name Kirkwall originates from the Norse name Kirkjuvagr, which later changed to Kirkvoe, Kirkwaa and Kirkwall.
On the west edge of the town, encompassed by Hatston Industrial Estate, is an ancient old landmark, Grain Earth House , a short low stone-walled section profound underground prompting a little pillared load. This is the type of earth house or souterrain normal for the Northern Isles. It was initially associated with a surface abiding, which has since vanished, and the first motivation behind these Iron Age structures stays obscure. Encourage west towards Grimbister is the comparative Rennibister Earth House.
