About Kilwinning
Kilwinning is a town in North Ayrshire, Scotland. It is on the River Garnock, north of Irvine, around 21 miles south of Glasgow. It is known as "The Crossroads of Ayrshire". Kilwinning was likewise a Civil Parish. The 2001 Census recorded the town as having a populace of 15,908. At the 2011 Census, Kilwinning had a populace of 21,456.
As indicated by John Hay, when the dean of the ward school in Kilwinning, "North Ayrshire has a past filled with religion extending back to the simple start of evangelist venture in Scotland. The Celtic Christians or Culdees of the time of St Columba and St Mungo found here, in this piece of Scotland, a fruitful field for the spread of the confidence. Kilmarnock, Kilbride, Kilbirnie, are all, such as Kilwinning, verbal proof of the presence of 'Cillean' or cells of the Culdee or Celtic Church."
In the inaccessible past, the town was called Sagtoun, or Saint's Town, after St. Winning, the originator of a mid seventh century church on this site. However, the genuine personality of St. Winning is indistinct. A few researchers have related him with the Irish holy person known as St Finnian of Moville, who kicked the bucket in the late 6th century. Others trust he was a Welshman by the name of Vynnyn, and the Aberdeen Breviary of 1507s that he was from Scotland.
