Hythe
About Hythe
Hythe is a small coastal market metropolis on the threshold of Romney Marsh, in the district of Folkestone and Hythe at the south coast of Kent. The phrase Hythe or Hithe is an Old English word which means haven or landing area. The town has medieval and Georgian buildings, as well as a Saxon/Norman church on the hill and a Victorian seafront prom. Hythe changed into as soon as defended via two castles, Saltwood and Lympne.
The city hall, a former guildhall, became constructed in 1794, its fire designed through the Adam Brothers. Hythe's market once befell in Market Square close to where there is now a farmers' market each 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. Hythe has gardening, horse riding, bowling, tennis, cricket, football, squash and crusing clubs. Lord Deedes turned into client of Hythe Civic Society, and the hounds of the East Kent Hunt are kennelled in nearby Elham.
As an essential Cinque Port Hythe once possessed a bustling harbour which, during the last three hundred years, has now disappeared because of silting. Hythe turned into the crucial Cinque Port, sitting among Hastings and New Romney to the west and Dover and Sandwich to the east. According to Hasted, a French fleet approached Hythe in 1293 and landed 200 men, however "the townsmen came upon them and slew each one among them: upon which the relaxation of the fleet hoisted sail and made no in addition try".
