Great Torrington
About Great Torrington
Great Torrington is a little market town in the north of Devon, England. Parts of it are sited on high ground with soak drops down to the River Torridge underneath, with the lower-lying parts of the town inclined to periodic flooding. Torrington is in the focal point of Tarka Country, a scene caught by Henry Williamson in his novel Tarka the Otter in 1927. Extraordinary Torrington has a standout amongst the most dynamic volunteering networks in the United Kingdom. Awesome Torrington had key criticalness in the English Civil War. In the Battle of Torrington 1646, the Parliamentarians, driven by Sir Thomas Fairfax, cleared into the town and crushed Lord Hopton's powers.
This denoted the finish of Royalist obstruction in the West Country. Today the town is perceived as an imperative legacy community for the historical backdrop of the seventeenth century, and its kin can frequently be seen wearing ensemble for recorded re-authorizations, celebrations and festivities. An intuitive Civil War Experience, "Torrington 1646", marks the town's verifiably vital job. The Torrington imprison was not sufficiently enormous for in excess of one man so the Royalists kept all the Parliamentarian detainees in the congregation. At that point 70 barrels of black powder detonated and murdered everybody held hostage and huge numbers of their captors.
