Galashiels
About Galashiels
Galashiels is a town in the Scottish Borders and notable area of Selkirkshire, on the Gala Water waterway. The name is regularly abbreviated to "Occasion". The town, with a populace of around 12,600, is a noteworthy business community for the Borders area. The town is known for material making, and is the area of Heriot-Watt University's School of Textiles and Design, Galashiels Academy and one grounds of the Borders College, which starting at 2009 has moved and now joins with the University. Toward the west of the town there is an antiquated earthwork known as the Picts' Work Ditch or Catrail. It broadens numerous miles south and its tallness and width differs.
There is no understanding about the reason for the earthwork. There is another old site on the north west edge of the town, at Torwoodlee, an Iron Age slope fortification, with a later Broch known as Torwoodlee Broch worked in the western quarter of the slope fortress, and covering a portion of the guarded trench of the first post. The Romans decimated the broch in AD 140, not long after it was finished. The town's crest indicates two foxes coming to up to eat plums from a tree, and the adage is Sour Plums articulated in Scots as soor plooms. It is a reference to an occurrence in 1337 when an assaulting gathering of English fighters were picking wild plums near the town and were gotten by Scots who went over them by shot and butchered them all.
