Gainsborough
About Gainsborough
Gainsborough is a town in the West Lindsey region of Lincolnshire, England. The number of inhabitants in the town was 22,117 at the 2015 census. It is arranged 18 miles north-west from the city and district town of Lincoln, and on the River Trent. At one time it filled in as an imperative port with exchange downstream to Hull, and was the most inland port in England, being in excess of 55 miles from the North Sea.
Gainsborough was one of the capital urban areas of Mercia amid the Anglo-Saxon period, which had gone before Danish run the show. It is reasonable that the Viking rulers would have been attracted to it as an authoritative focus, being near the Danish fortress at Torksey. In 868 King Alfred wedded Ealswitha, little girl of Aethelred Mucill, head of the Gaini, whence the town gets its name. Truly, Gainsborough is the "capital that never was".
Towards the finish of July 1013, the Dane Sweyn Forkbeard, together with his child and beneficiary Canute, touched base in Gainsborough with a multitude of victory. Sweyn vanquished the Anglo-Saxon resistance and King Ethelred fled the nation. Sweyn was announced King of England, and he came back to Gainsborough. Sweyn and Canute took up high office at the Gainsborough Castle, while his armed force involved the camp at Thonock. But King Sweyn was murdered five weeks after the fact when he was tossed from his pony in Gainsborough. His child Canute built up a base somewhere else.
