About Exmouth
Exmouth is a port town, common ward and ocean side resort, sited on the east bank of the mouth of the River Exe and 11 miles 18 km southeast of Exeter. Byzantine coins with the characteristic of Anastasius I, going back to c. 498– 518, were recovered from the shoreline in 1970. More late human control of Exmouth Point can be followed back to the eleventh century, when it was known as Lydwicnaesse, "the purpose of the Bretons". The town shows up on the century Peutinger Map one of just 15 British towns and the second most westerly town in general to show up on that Roman Era outline.
The two clerical wards, Littleham and Withycombe Raleigh, that make up the town of Exmouth today can be followed to pre-Saxon occasions. The name of the town gets from its area at the mouth of the River Exe estuary, which at last originates from an antiquated Celtic word for fish. In 1240 a region known as Pratteshuthe was sold to the leader and subjects of Exeter. This was the site of the estuary's ship dock and after some time the name developed first into Pratteshide, then Mona Island. The first site is set apart by a seating territory outside the Glenorchy United Reformed Church near the Magnolia Shopping Center.
