Elvet Bridge
About Elvet Bridge
Elvet Bridge is an ancient stonework curve which connects to the River Wear in the city of Durham, in County Durham, England.
It interfaces the landmass in focal Durham and the Elvet zone of the city and is a Grade I recorded building.
The scaffold has 10 unmistakable curves, however, there is some disagreement about what number of curves exists altogether.
The mid-sixteenth-century savant John Leland accepted there were 14 curves, however, this has never been demonstrated. The stream moves through four full curves – the remaining are dry or incompletely so.
The mid-nineteenth century savant Robert Surtees composed that there were 10 curves, and this number has been confirmed. Others might be covered up underneath the road on the Elvet side or underneath Souter Peth.
