Ellesmere Memorial Monument

Ellesmere Memorial Monument positioned in Worsley. Two main stages and a spire. Spire was initially on top of a tall octagonal column, 40 metres excessive, which has been eliminated. Lower degree has gabled perspective buttress with off-units. Pointed arch aedicules on squat colonettes framing fingers and an inscription. Steep crocketed gable over dwarf biforium with cusped arcade and crocketed gablets. Heraldic finials at corners eliminated c. 1980. Upper stage octagonal.

Crocketed gables with pierced tympana supported on colonnettes framing pointed arches which in turn body cusped pointed arches of which the ones on the diagonal aspects are blind. Octagonal spire with open lantern level of which each pointed opening is surmounted through a gable. Iron railings with decorative finials. Shortly after the dying of the primary Earl a subscription changed into opened "mainly the ious Ellesmere tenants" to fund a memorial and a committee become appointed. In February 1858 the committee marketed for designs, specifying a number of situations.

These have been that the layout must no longer be a statue, that it have to fee £1,800 and that it have to be "full-size and durable instead of elaborate and decorative, and that it have to effortlessly be seen from a distance". Of the 161 designs submitted six had been selected for examination by way of the referee, Edward Barry. First prize went to London architects Driver and Webber.
