Durham
About Durham
Durham is a noteworthy city and the province town of County Durham in North East England. The city lies on the River Wear, toward the west of Sunderland, south of Newcastle upon Tyne and toward the north of Darlington. Established over the last resting spot of St Cuthbert, its Norman house of God turned into a focal point of journey in medieval England.
The house of prayer and contiguous eleventh century manor were assigned a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. The mansion has been the home of Durham University since 1832. HM Prison Durham is likewise found near the downtown area.
The name "Durham" originates from the Celtic component "dun", meaning a slope post, and the Old Norse "holme", which means island.
Some credit the city's name to the legend of the Dun Cow and the milkmaid who in legend guided the priests of Lindisfarne conveying the collection of Saint Cuthbert to the site of the present city in 995 AD.The Lord Bishop of Durham takes a Latin iety of the city's name in his official mark, which is marked "N. Dunelm".
