About Downes Crediton
Downes House is arranged around one mile east of Crediton in Devon. The house is an eighteenth century Palladian re-demonstrating of a prior house. It was classed Grade II recorded on 20 May 1985. Close-by is the site of a Roman estate, uncovered by trim stamps as a rectangular walled in area containing a winged-hallway structure.
In 2012 the home contained 1400 sections of land, including the Home Farm 419 sections of land, Fordton Barton 203 sections of land, Uton Barton 327 sections of land, Dunscombe Farm 246 sections of land and other land 110 sections of land and parkland. The bequest of Downes was obtained in 1692 by Moses Gould 1668– 1703, oldest child and beneficiary of William Gould 1640– 1671 of Hayes i.e. Floyer Hayes in the ward of St Thomas, Exeter and Dunscombe, MP for Dartmouth in 1671.
