About Down Cathedral
Down Cathedral, the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, is a Church of Ireland cathedral placed within the town of Downpatrick in Northern Ireland. It stands on Cathedral Hill overlooking the town. It is one of two cathedrals in the Diocese of Down and Dromore inside the Province of Ulster. The cathedral is centre factor in Downpatrick. It is an ancient ecclesiastical web site with a church dedicated to the Holy Trinity recorded inside the twelfth century. In 1124 St Malachy have become Bishop of Down, and set about repairing and enlarging the Cathedral.
In 1177, Sir John de Courcy introduced in Benedictine priests and expelled Augustinian monks settled there via St Malachy. De Courcy, who had enraged the king by way of his seizure of lands in Ireland past what he become granted, became taken jail there on Good Friday 1204. According to the account, the unarmed de Courcy managed to take a weapon from one in all his attackers and killed 13 men earlier than being overpowered and brought prisoner.
