Doncaster

Doncaster is a large market town in South Yorkshire, England. Together with its encompassing rural areas and settlements, the town shapes some portion of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, which had a mid-2017 est. populace of 308,900. The town itself has a populace of 109,805. The Doncaster Urban Area had a populace of 158,141 out of 2011 and incorporates Doncaster and neighboring little towns.

Some portion of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974, Doncaster is around 17 miles north-east of Sheffield, with which it is served by a worldwide air terminal, Doncaster Sheffield Airport in Finningley. Under the Local Government Act 1972, Doncaster was joined into a recently made metropolitan precinct in 1974, itself consolidated with other adjacent wards in the 1974 making of the metropolitan province of South Yorkshire. Doncaster is for the most part accepted to be the Cair Daun recorded as one of the 28 urban communities of Britain in the ninth century History of the Britons generally credited to Nennius.

It was unquestionably an Anglo-Saxon burh, amid which period it got its present name: "Wear " from the Roman settlement and stream and "caster" from an Old English adjustment of the Latin castra. The settlement was made reference to in the 1003 will of Wulfric Spott. Soon after the Norman Conquest, Nigel Fossard refortified the town and developed Conisbrough Castle.
