About Brougham Castle
Brougham Castle is a medieval constructing approximately 2 miles south-east of Penrith, Cumbria, England. The citadel was based by means of Robert I de Vieuxpont in the early thirteenth century. The website, near the confluence of the rivers, Eamont and Lowther, had been selected through the Romans for a Roman fort called Brocavum. The fortress is scheduled as an Ancient Monument, at the side of the castle, as "Brougham Roman fort and Brougham Castle". In its earliest shape, the castle consisted of a stone preserve, with an enclosure included by means of an earthen financial institution and a timber palisade.
When the castle was built, Robert de Vieuxpont become one of the most effective lords within the place who have been loyal to King John. The Vieuxponts had been a powerful land-proudly owning family in North West England, who also owned the castles of Appleby and Brough. In 1264, Robert de Vieuxpont's grandson, also named Robert, was d a traitor, and his belongings became confiscated via Henry III. Brougham Castle and the alternative estates were in the end lower back to the Vieuxpont family, and stayed of their possession, till 1269, while the estates handed to the Clifford circle of relatives via marriage.
