Bolton Steam Museum
About Bolton Steam Museum
The largest collection of working mill steam engines in the UK.The museum is on the old Atlas Mills site in Bolton and displays around 30 stationary steam engines that used to provide power in the textile mills of the north of England.Bolton Steam Museum is located in a former cotton warehouse of the old Atlas Mills complex, now on Morrison's supermarket site off Chorley Old Road, Bolton.
Larger motors incorporate a mammoth 40-ton 'McNaughted' pillar motor, an exceptionally uncommon 1840 twin-shaft motor and a one of a kind 'non-right on target' vertical motor worked by Musgraves of Bolton.Volunteers from the Northern Mill Engine Society have safeguarded and renovated old stationary steam motors – a portion of the motors which once controlled the cotton plants and woolen factories of the north of England.
