About Battery Rocks
Battery Rocks are a rocky headland situated to the south of the harbour of Penzance, Cornwall, UK. The rocks take their name from a gun battery that become situated there from 1740, following a petition by way of Penzance Borough council for safety from French naval attacks. The rocks are the placing for the Penzance warfare memorial and the restored Grade II Listed Jubilee Pool, an art deco lido, one of the very few surviving and defined inside the listing notes as one of the greatest examples. People swim from the rocks daily in the course of the year.
Battery Rocks and the adjoining tidal beach, a favorite neighborhood spot, are an quintessential part of the Pen Sans—Holy Headland—after which Penzance is known as. Battery Rocks have been a location for iciness swimmers from at the least the Eighties as became noted in an 1881 edition of The Cornishman newspaper, which defined the practice of the once a year Boxing Day swim being loved through the ″all-year-round″ bathers. They also are domestic to a ramification of wildlife such as a colony of rare red sandpiper which suggests a desire for rocky beaches. Most of the sandpipers wintering in Cornwall are possibly from the Canadian arctic and the rejection of the proposed development of Penzance harbour, reduced the threat to the nearby flock.
