About Atherton
Atherton is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, England and truly was a piece of Lancashire. From the seventeenth century, for around 300 years, Atherton was known as Chowbent, which was every now and again abbreviated to Bent, the town's old moniker. Toward the start of the twentieth century the town was depicted as "the focal point of an area of collieries, cotton factories and iron-works, which cover the surface of the nation with their inartistic structures and environment, and are connected together by the similarly unattractive residences of the general population".
Atherton is a discretionary ward of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan. The ward chooses three councilors to the 75-part metropolitan district committee, Wigan's neighborhood specialist. Atherton is worked around seven creeks: the Shakerley Brook shapes the western limit with Tyldesley; Chanters Brook moves through the region known as "The Valley"; Knight's Brook Bag Lane; Colliers Brook; Small Brook is the limit with Westleigh; Westhoughton Brook frames the limit with Daisy Hill; and Red Waters Brook.
