About Aldgate
Aldgate is a region of Central London, England, inside the City of London. It is found 2.3 miles east north-east of Charing Cross. It exists in the Historic County of Middlesex. It was the eastern-most portal through the London Wall driving from the City of London to Whitechapel and the East End of London. It gives its name to a City ward limited by White Kennet Street in the north and Crutched Friars in the south, taking in Leadenhall and Fenchurch Streets, which remain foremost avenues through the City, each part from the short road named Aldgate that associates with Aldgate High Street.John Cass' school, where a plaque records the previous arrangement of London Wall, is sited on the north side of Aldgate.
It is believed that an entryway at Aldgate spread over the street to Colchester in the Roman time frame, when London Wall was developed. The entryway which most likely had two roundabout towers remained at the edge of the cutting edge Duke's Place, on the east side of the City, with a bustling lane going through it. It was remade somewhere in the range of 1108 and 1147, again in 1215, and recreated totally somewhere in the range of 1607 and 1609 "in a more established and less utilitarian style". Like London's different doors, Aldgate was "sustained with porticullises and anchored" in 1377 because of worries about potential assaults by the French.
