About Independence Square

Independence Square is the vital square of Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine. One of the town's major squares, it is located on Khreshchatyk Street within the Shevchenko Raion. The square has been recognized under many distinctive names, but often it's far known as virtually Maidan. In the nineteenth century, the rectangular contained homes of the town council and noble assembly. Since the begin of Ukraine's independence movement in 1990, the square has been the traditional area for political rallies, inclusive of 4 huge-scale radical protest campaigns: the 1990 student "Revolution on Granite", the 2001 "Ukraine with out Kuchma", the 2004 Orange Revolution, and the 2013–14 Euromaidan.

Maidan is also a regular site for non-political shows and occasions, however since 2014 most of them were moved to Sofiyivska Square or elsewhere, because making leisure on an area in which people had been killed for the duration of Euromaidan became considered irrelevant. Most significantly, Christmas Fairs and New Year celebrations have been moved to Sofiyivska Square.
