About Kocaeli Museum
Kocaeli Museum, a.k.a. Kocaeli Archeology and Ethnography Museum or Izmit Museum, is a national gallery in Kocaeli, northwestern Turkey, showing archeological curios and ethnographic items. It is housed in the previous railroad station of Izmit. The gallery is arranged on Istasyon St. in Kozlu neighborhood of Izmit. The railroad station was structured by German planner Otto Ritter, and worked somewhere in the range of 1873 and 1910. The office covers a region of 21 daa. The railroad station wound up old after the course of the railroad, which kept running along the shore of Marmara Sea and went through the downtown area, was changed to run north of the city.
After rebuilding works for redevelopment, which started in 2004, the previous railroad station was opened mid 2007. The historical center comprises of 1,965 archeological, 1,549 ethnographic items and 5,155 coins.In expansion to the show lobbies, there is a 130-situated gathering room and a research facility. The historical center items are somewhat displayed in the exhibition hall lobbies and halfway outdoors in the gallery yard. A steam train and two railroad autos, updated as cafeteria and eatery and arranged before the historical center, serve the visitors. In the gallery lobbies, curios from Paleolithic, Hellenic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman time are displayed.
