About Kars
Kars is a city in upper east Turkey and the capital of Kars Province. With a populace of 73,836 starting at 2011, it is the biggest city on the Turkish side close to the shut fringe with Armenia. For a concise time frame it filled in as the capital of the medieval Bagratid Kingdom of Armenia. Its centrality expanded in the 19th century, when the Ottoman and Russian realms challenged the ownership of the city, with the Russians picking up control because of the 1877-78 war.
Amid World War I, the Ottomans took control of the city in 1918 and pronounced the Provisional National Government of the Southwestern Caucasus 1 December 1918, yet were forced to surrender it to the First Republic of Armenia following the Armistice of Mudros marked 30 October 1918. Amid the war in 1915, Turkish progressives caught Kars for the last time. The controversial Treaty of Kars, marked in 1921 by the Government of the Grand National Assembly and by the Soviet republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, built up the present north-eastern limits of Turkey.
