About Karkamis
Karkamis, otherwise known as Kargamis, is a town and locale of Gaziantep Province in southeastern Turkey, beside the site of old Karkemish. The number of inhabitants in the town was 2,998 of every 2010. It is a fringe checkpoint making progress toward Jarabulus in Syria. In 2004, 8,071 vehicles and 38,263 individuals passed the outskirt checkpoint into Turkey while 8,795 vehicles and 35,474 individuals crossed it towards Syria.
The River Euphrates runs east of Karkamis southwards into Syria. At this place, a railroad extension of 870 m that was worked between 1911-1913 by German architects as a major aspect of the Istanbul- Baghdad Railway, crosses the waterway parallel to the fringe line. One of the 21 dams of the Southeastern Anatolia Project, the Karkamis Dam and hydroelectric power station is found 4.5 km upstream from the outskirt intersection of Euphrates. In March 2011, the Turkish army installation which included Karkemish ruins was cleared of mines. Archeologists from Italy and Turkey have started unearthings in the town in September 2011.
The Municipality of Karkamis was built up in 1961, preceding at that point having been appointed officially under Nizip. At the season of the renowned British Museum unearthings at the close-by archeological site misleading the East, Karkamis was not yet existing, just the railroad station worked by the Germans being now there, since the fundamental town around then was Jarabulus, now in Syria. After the Turkish War of Independence a settlement was set up around the railroad station which came to be named after the renowned close-by archeological site.
