About Phu Hin Rong Kla Mountain

Phu Hin Rong Kla Mountain is located near the Laotian border. This mountainous region is basically situated at the junction of three major regions the Isan, North, the Northeast and Central Thailand. This mountain is around 1800 metres high. In the year 1984 the flat-topped part of this mountain and the surrounding area was selected to be decorated as national park. The park vicinity covers an area of 307 square kilometers. Other than eye-catching views, the park houses some of the stunning rock formations, ious types of forest, waterfalls, and Hmong hill tribe villages. The park also offers a charming glimpse into the most tumultuous chapter of the countrys modern history.

The entrance of the park is located at a distance of twenty kilometers from the town. Here, some Hmong children from a nearby village may welcome you. They sell some multi coloured handicrafts and dried flowers. The area is poised of hundreds of meter solid layers of sandstone. It is believed that Phu Hin Rong Kla Mountain area consist of 100 million years old sandstone beds. These are some inquisitive rong kla hardened channels by the mountain side which are overgrown with deep layers of mosses, ferns, lichens, wolfs claws, orchid and flowering shrubs. The call of the barbet, a green bird which is generally found in tree tops. , add to the feeling of walking on foot through a prehistoric landscape. The park has dry dipterocarp, hill evergreen forests, mixed deciduous and dry evergreen forests. Mixed Deciduous Forest is quite spacious and remains open. The quality of the soil and moisture is low.

The commonly found tree species include Shorea obtusa, Shorea siamensis, Dipterocarpus tuberculatus and Dipterocarpus obtusifolius. Dry Evergreen Forest contains better and moister soil. The wonderful Species include Hopea ferrea, Hopea oborata, Chukrasia venlatina, Dipterocarpus alatus, Anisoptera cochinchinensis, Dalbergia oliveri, bamboo, and Brahm. Hill Evergreen Forest hoses some of the soft species of woods. The ieties include Betula alnoides, Dacrydium elatum, Pinus merksii P. kasiya, Eugenia cumini, and Anneslea fragrans Podocarpus imbricatus. The ied and rich wildlife includes leopards, Asiatic Black Bears, tigers, fox, wild boar, leopard cats, monkeys, wild hare and wonderful species of bird species, like common Flameback, Asian Barred Owlet, jungle fowl, boves barbets, bulbuls, Brown Hawk-Owl, and swallows.
