About Pangani
Pangani is a metropolis in northeast Tanzania that lies forty five km south of Tanga, at the mouth of the Pangani River. It is the headquarters of Pangani District. Although archaeologists have discovered the stays of small fifteenth century settlements at the bluffs just north of Pangani, the modern-day metropolis got here to prominence within the 19th century, while, below nominal Zanzibari rule, it become a first-rate terminus of caravan routes to the deep indoors. From the 1860s onward townspeople mounted big plantations of sugar and coconut in Mauya, alongside the banks of the river simply west of town.
The plantations have been worked by slave hard work, and Pangani also have become an vital center of the slave alternate, transport captives taken in the wars attendant at the crumble of the Shambaa kingdom in the Usambara Mountains to the plantations of Pemba and Zanzibar. After the Sultan of Zanzibar signed treaties with Great Britain outlawing the sea-going trade in slaves in 1873, Pangani became a center for smuggling slaves throughout the narrow channel to Pemba, in evasion of British warships.
