This is Taiwan's biggest Catholic Church. Established in 1859, it is the primary house of prayer to be revived by the Catholic Church and is additionally the source of Catholicism in present day Taiwan. As the present Minor Basilica for the Diocese of Kaohsiung, it is one of Asia's three church buildings. The Basilica is worked in the style of European Gothic chapels, including a Roman style in places, while the inside is spread out in octagons. It was voted number one in the Taiwanese 100 Scenic Spot things of Architecture in 2001. The Holy Rosary Cathedral is the most established Catholic Church in Taiwan, situated in Lingya District, Kaohsiung, only east of the Love River.
It is the seat of the Bishop of Kaohsiung. The house of prayer was first settled in 1860 by Spanish from Filipinas and reconstructed to its present measurements in 1928. The structural style is designed according to both Gothic and Romanesque. The inside outline is freely like that of Manila Cathedral in the Philippines. Mass is held day by day, with English mass celebrated at 11:00 a.m. each Sunday. The church is known all through Kaohsiung for its yearly Christmas Eve festivities, which keeps going the entire night before Christmas Day.
