Klingnau
About Klingnau
Klingnu is a municipality in Zurzch of Canton district of Argou, Switzerland. Klingonu is first mentioned in 1239 as Clingnow. Ulrich of Klingon acquired the city from the monastery of St Blaze in 1239. He and the abbess reached an agreement, from which his farmers of Abhay could go to the new city. The Von Klingon family provided extensive land to the hospitality of knights around the city of 1251 and 1268. The Knights had such property that in 1268, they transferred their order house from Leggarn to Klingnu. They were given a different gate in the walls of the city.
Klingen's Walther sold his cousin to the city and surroundings of Constance Eberhard von Waldberg in 1269. The new owner then appointed a bailiff in the city. Klingonu became the seat of an outskirts district, which included Koblenz, Siglistorf, Melstorf, Dottingen and Zurzch. In 1314, Klingnu was given the city's privileges. Every year in Midmas, citizens were allowed to choose their lower and upper city council and a municipal court. In 1416, the Order's House of Nights went back to Legion. By 1800, an administrator managed the property of the knights. From 1415 to 1798, during the reign of the Swiss Confederation, Klingnu was one of Baden County's three outdoor districts.
