Gutenberg Museum
About Gutenberg Museum
The Gutenberg Museum is one of the oldest museums of printing in the world, located opposite the cathedral in the old part of Mainz. Its name is named after inventor Johannes Gutenberg in the inventive metal type in Western Europe. The collection includes examples of printing equipment and printed material from many cultures. A group of people founded the museum in 1900, 500 years after the birth of Johannes Gutenberg, to honor the inventor and present his technical and artistic achievements in front of the masses. He also aimed to demonstrate the writing and printing of various cultures as possible.
The makers of publishers, printing machines and printing house donated books, tools and machines, who made the collection base. In its first few years the museum was part of the city library, which means that the most beautiful and specialty versions can be expected from the museum with a comprehensive collection of libraries. The visitors were presented with a survey of nearly 500 years of printed book. At that time, the museum included the history of printing techniques, book art, job printing and ex-library, graphics and poster, paper, writing of all the cultures of the world and books of modern artists.
