Scattered neolithic artifacts suggest that the Belp vicinity became inhabited prehistorically. Bronze Age cemeteries and La Tene artifacts show that there were villages near current Belp before the Roman invasion. After the fall apart of the Roman Empire the region may also were uninhabited, however by means of the High Middle Ages there had been villages and wood castles here.
Very little is thought approximately Fahrhubel Castle, located about seven-hundred meters north-west of the Hunzigenbrucke, and it turned into subsequently completely demolished. Hohberg Castle, at the northern slope of the Belpberg, was the ancestral seat of the Freiherren of Belp-Montenach. It was built around 1135 and nowadays only ruins remain. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the circle of relatives improved their authority from Belp to consist of neighboring villages. In 1277 they created the Herrschaft of Belp to encompass all their estates and villages.
