Augusta Raurica
About Augusta Raurica
Agusta Rourica is a Roman archaeological site and is an open-air museum in Switzerland, which is located on the south bank of the River Rhine, about 20 km east of Basel near the villages of Inst and Casuurg. This is the site of the oldest known Roman colony on the Rhine. Augusta Raurica, or Colonia Agusta Rourer, was founded around Louisiana Munatius Planckas, around 44 BC, around the relatives of a local Gaelic tribe, Raurasi, Helva.
No archaeological evidence of this period has yet been found, from which it is concluded that either colony's colony was troubled by civil war after the death of Julius Caesar, or Plank's colony was in fact in the area of modern basel, not August. In 2nd century BC, Augusta Rourica was a prosperous commercial trading center and, in its glorious days, was the capital of a local Roman province.
It is estimated that the population has reached almost 20,000 people. Augusta Raurica enriched between the first and third centuries, and exported smoked pork and bacon to other parts of the Roman Empire. This city has the largest Roman theater in the north of Roman city, an amphitheater, a main stage, several small stages, an aqueduct, a variety of temples, many public baths and the Alps, which has 8,000 to 10,000 seats. Many of these sites are open to visitors all year round.
