About Alt-Schauenburg Castle
Alt-Schauenburg is a ruined fortress in the commune of Frenkendorf, Switzerland. It is placed close to the border of France and Germany, and little of the fortress remains due to geological events. There were Schauenburg castles near Frenkendorf, Alt Schauenburg about 1 km southwest of the village at the pinnacle of Chleiflueli hill and Neu Schauenburg to the west. Alt-Schauenburg become possibly constructed round 1275 because the seat of a junior branch of the Schauenburg own family. The citadel became occupied for less than a century.
The 1356 Basel earthquake destroyed plenty of the citadel and shortly thereafter the ruins had been deserted. The ruins have been step by step buried, until 1949-50 after they had been excavated and repaired. In 1976-77 extra construction helped preserve the site. Many of the walls are still standing following the two conservation projects. The southern method become guarded via a protect wall. One corner of the wall turned into protected by means of a semi-round avant-corps. Inside the defend wall, the fortress tower and residence hall have been rectangular.
