Bored and wanting a surprise which wakes you from the routine everyday life? A trip to an off-beat place is your answer. But, then there are many kinds of extreme holidays. You can visit the hottest places, coldest destinations, take adventure sport trips, go to barren or lonely locations and so on. What entices one may not be as alluring for the others. Now, if you do not mind wearing tons of clothing, love the snow and the windswept landscapes, we outline here some very interesting "hatke" places where the mercury falls to the temperature of -40 degrees.
1. Yakutsk, Russia
Yakutsk is a city on stilts and holds the distinction as the world's coldest city. The stilts help as otherwise the shifting permafrost collapses buildings without them. It is a city delicately connected to even the remote Far East. To reach here you have to go by road to the BAM line (a branch of the Trans-Siberian Express) via a ferry ride of 24 hours.
2. Canadas Dempster Highway
Dempster highway passes by peaks and rolling tundra as it reached the Arctic hub of Inuvik, gateway to Western Arctic. This road trip can very well boast of being one of the enchanting ones as the Dempster Highway is one of only two roads in North America that cross the Arctic Circle. History, scenery and wildlife all come together to give you a beautiful experience on this road.
3. Greenland
Although studded with glaciers and icebergs, the iceberg full Disko Bay and Ilulissat, hub of Greenland's tourist industry are the main tourist attractions in Greenland. And Ilulissat has Ilulissat Kangerlua (Jakobshavn Icefjord), the northern hemisphere's most prolific tidewater glacier. It disgorges gargantuan icebergs into Disko Bay.
4. Eureka
An Arctic Weather station, Eureka is one of the world's coldest inhabited places. Eureka research base on Canada's far-northern Ellesmere Island, was established as a weather station in 1947 and boasts an average annual temperature of around ?20 deg. cel. which goes down to -40 deg. cel in winters. To get here, you have to fly in from Resolute, which is an expensive affair indeed.
5. Ulaanbaatar
World's coldest capital, Ulaanbaatar is a commercial hub and cultural, political, economic and social hub as well. Explore its cultural representations and museums, visit the restaurants and go deep into its unique vibe. You can then go for excursions into the countryside.
