1. AKASHI KAIKYO BRIDGE, JAPAN
This is an outstanding sample of modern civil engineering - World's largest cable bridge, suspended with no pillars. Completed in 1998, it is known to have the longest central suspension span of 1,991 meters linking the city of Kobe on the mainland to Iwaya on Awaji Island.
2. MILLAU VIADUCT, FRANCE
This tallest bridge in the world spans the valley of the river Tarn near Millau in southern France. It is the 12th highest bridge deck in the world, being 270 metres (890 ft) between the road deck and the ground below. It was completed on 14th December 2014. This bridge has one mast's summit at 343 meters above the base of the structure and this cable-stayed road bridge received the 2006 IABSE outstanding structure award.
3. USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH
The construction of this huge piece of engineering began in 2001 at Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard and was completed in 2009 at a cost of $6.2 billion. It stretches for 1092 feet and displaces over 100,000 tons, equipped with the latest technology and powered by nuclear reactors, which gives it the capability to operate for 20 years without refueling. It is considered to be one of the largest warships.
4. NORTH EUROPEAN GAS PIPELINE, RUSSIA/GERMANY
With two parallel lines, this offshore natural gas pipeline runs from Vyborg in Russia to Greifswald in Germany. This longest sub-sea pipeline had its first line laid by May 2011 and was inaugurated 8 November 2011; the second line was laid in 2011-2012 and was inaugurated on 8 October 2012.
5. BEIJING NATIONAL STADIUM, CHINA
Commonly known as Bird's nest, this world's largest steel structure is located in Beijing. It was designed by Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron for use during the 2008 summer Olympics and Paralympics.
6. BAILONG ELEVATOR, CHINA
This glass elevator is the highest and heaviest outdoor elevator in the world, built onto the side of a 300 meter huge cliff in Wulingyuan area in China. It is also referred to as "Hundred Dragons Elevator". It can carry 50 people in one trip and takes 2 minutes to ride from the base to the top.
7. PALM ISLANDS, DUBAI
These three islands; the palm Jumeirah, the palm Jebel Ali and the palm Deira are examples of modern engineering breakthroughs. They are the world's largest artificial islands with 1,500 villas in it, and are found in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
8. EUROTUNNEL, UK/FRANCE
The tunnel has most of it stretching underneath water from England and ends in France; it is 31 miles of which 23 miles runs in the sea.
9. THREE GORGES DAM, CHINA
It is a hydroelectric dam spanning over the Yangtze River along Sandouping located in china. Construction began in 1994 and became operational in 2008. The three gorges dam is the world's largest power station with an installed capacity of 22,500 MW. Not only does it produce electricity for the area, it also increases shipping capacity and provides flood storage space.
10. PAN-STARS
This acronym stands for Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System. This design was developed at the University of Hawaii for Astronomy, to be used for wide-field imaging. The key purpose for this is to identify and characterize earth-approaching objects, both comets and asteroids. It is also capable of seeing objects in the inner and outer solar system, and now galaxy properties are better viewed than before.
