1. Tihar Jail
Also called Tihar Ashram or Tihar Prison. Is a prison complex in Delhi, India and the largest complex of prisons in South Asia. It contains nine central prisons, and is one of the two prison complexes in Delhi, along with a district prison at Rohini Prison Complex.
Tihar Jail is operating from 1957 and has the capacity of 5,200 inmates.
The prison is styled as a correctional institution.
Its main objective is to convert its inmates into ordinary members of society by providing them with useful skills, education, and respect for the law.
It aims to improve the inmates' self-esteem and strengthen their desire to improve.
To engage, rehabilitate, and reform its inmates, Tihar uses music therapy, which involves music training sessions and concerts.
The prison has its own radio station, run by inmates.
There is also a prison industry within the walls, manned wholly by inmates, which bears the brand Tihar.
2. Yerwada Central Jail
High-security prison and largest jail in the state of Maharashtra, and also one of the largest prisons in South Asia.
Situated in Pune, it also has Yerwada Open Jail just outside the Yerwada Central jail within the campus.
The campus is spread over 512 acres.
Many famous personalities like Mahatma Gandhi have been jailed here during the Indian independence movement in 1930s and 1940s. It houses over 3,600 prisoners (2005) spread over various barracks and security zones.
3. Puzhal Central Prison
Located in Tiruvallur near Chennai.
One of the largest prison complexes in India.
Puzhal Central jail has the capacity of 3000 prisoners and began operational from year 2006.
The prison complex occupies an area corresponding to 212 acres (0.86 km2).
It comprises three complexes of buildings:
Puzhal Prison I for remand prisoners,
Puzhal Prison II for convicts and
Special Prison for women.
4. Rajahmundry Central Prison
Located in Rajahmundry, India.
In 1602, the Dutch constructed a fort in Rajahmundry. The British empire converted it into a jail in 1864, and then elevated it to a central jail in 1870. The jail is spread over 196 acres (79 ha) out of which the buildings occupy 37.24 acres (15.07 ha).
5. Naini Central Prison
Located at Naini, near Allahabad, is one of most important prison, and Correctional Institution in Uttar Pradesh, built during the British Raj.
It a open jail with high security area with the capacity of 3000 prisoners.
