About Matara
Matara is a noteworthy city in Sri Lanka, on the southern shoreline of Southern Province, 160 km from Colombo. It is a noteworthy business center point, and it is the managerial capital of Matara District. It was gravely influenced by the Asian torrent in December 2004. Matara truly has a place with the region that was known as the Kingdom of Ruhuna, which was one of the three kingdoms in Sri Lanka. Matara was already called Mahathota.
The Nilwala River goes through Matara and there was a wide region where ships used to cross. Henceforth, the town was called Maha Thota which was gotten from the Sanskrit word Maha Theertha, which signifies "the colossal ship". As indicated by Thotagamuwe Sri Rahula Thera's Paravi Sndesaya King Weerabamapanam made Matara as his capital and named it "Mapatuna". In the 16 and 1800 of years, Matara was led by the Portuguese and the Dutch individually.In 1672 the Portuguese called the town "Maturai", which implies an extraordinary fortification. This may have been an error of Thurai, or, in other words word for "Ship". The present name of "Matara," notwithstanding, has been in utilized throughout the previous three centuries, identifying with the town's association with the Nilwala River.
