About The Archaeological Museum of Asturias

The Archaeological Museum of Asturias is housed within the 16th century benedictine monastery of Saint Vicente in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain. Its findings encompass collections of the Asturian Neolithic, Megalithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Astur hill fort tradition, Roman period, and of the Gothic, Pre-Romanesque and Romanesque durations of the Kingdom of Asturias. The museum also consists of sections of Asturian Ethnography, Heraldry, Medieval and Modern Epigraphy, Spanish Numismatics, a European Medal Section, and Armor. The museum falls beneath the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture but is managed through the Council of Culture of the Government of the Principality of Asturias.

The precedent for the present day museum lies in the Provincial Commission on Monuments, created in 1845, which achieved the primary actions to protect the monuments and cultural background of Asturias, starting the primary museum in 1870 inside the Convent of San Francisco, which has on account that ceased to exist, with portions accrued all through the Asturian location as well as from non-public donations. Since 1952, the museum has occupied the cloister of the previous Monastery of San Vicente, a building with a complex history related to the beginning of the town. The cloister became d a national monument in 1934.
