About Pilona
Pilona is a municipality inside the province and self sustaining community of Asturias, northwestern Spain. Its capital is the town of Infiesto. Pilona is bounded to the north via Villaviciosa and Colunga, to the east through Parres, to the west by Nava and Cabranes, and to the south by using Ponga, Caso and Sobrescobio. The location is semi-mountainous with many small, but deep and slim valleys. In prehistoric instances Pilona lay along the natural route between Oviedo and Cangas de Onns, in the narrow basin that parallels the coast.
Pilona become the largest agreement along that route which connected primary Asturias with the Asturian east. Even earlier there have been paleolithic settlements in caves in Pilona such as Aviao Espinaredo Cave, Collareu Cave, and La Pena Ferran Ferran Rock which had been excavated through the Count de los angeles Vega del Sella within the 1920s. There are numerous sites with paleolithic rock art and Neanderthal remains, most fantastic possibly being Sidron Cave in Borines.
The area is bad, and is depopulating. There were over 20,000 inhabitants in 1930; 8,799 in 2001; and 8,440 in 2005. The 3 biggest towns are Infiesto with approximately 20% of the population and Villamayor and Sevares. All three are at the Pilona River, a left-hand tributary of the Sella River, and on the main dual carriageway, the N-634.The area is agricultural with livestock elevating for both milk and meat, and with a few manufacturing of forest merchandise
