Yeonpyeong

Yeonpyeong Island or Yeonpyeongdo is a set of South Korean islands within the Yellow Sea, located approximately 80 km west of Incheon and 12 km south of the coast of Hwanghae Province, North Korea. The important island of the group is Daeyeonpyeongdo Big Yeonpyeong Island also noted absolutely as Yeonpyeong Island, with an area of 7.01 km2 and a population of round 1,300. Yeonpyeong lies near the Northern Limit Line and is most effective 12 km from the North Korean shoreline.

The 1953 Armistice Agreement which ended the Korean War specified that 5 island corporations, along with Yeonpyeong, might stay under South Korean control. North Korea in the end reputable the UN mentioned western maritime border for many years till around the mid 90s. However, because the 1990s, North Korea has disputed the NLL. The North Korean authorities claim a border farther south that encompasses precious fishing grounds even though it skirts round South Korean held islands inclusive of Yeonpyeong.
