Nelson Mandela Square
About Nelson Mandela Square
Nelson Mandela Square is an open square and mall in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa. The square was once in the past known as Sandton Square and was named for the previous President of South Africa and hostile to politically-sanctioned racial segregation extremist Nelson Mandela in March 2004. A six meter high statue of Mandela was divulged at the service to rename the square. It is joined to the huge Sandton City mall, together framing one of the biggest retail buildings on the landmass with more than 400 stores.
The Square, at that point known by its unique name of Sandton Square, was first opened to people in general in 1994. On its tenth commemoration, in 2004, it was authoritatively renamed Nelson Mandela Square after the disclosing of a Bronze, six-meter tall statue of Mandela. It was the main open statue of Mandela in the nation. It was authorized in July 2002 and finished in February 2004 by South African Sculptors Kobus Hattingh and Jacob Maponyane. It weighs around 2.5 tons. The Square is associated with Sandton City and, together, they structure the biggest retail complex in Africa. The Square itself is around 1000m2 and houses numerous shops, cafes and a library on the far end.
