About Vorkuta
Vorkuta is a coal-mining metropolis inside the Komi Republic, Russia, located simply north of the Arctic Circle within the Pechora coal basin on the Usa River. Industrial coal fields with the aid of the Vorkuta River were found in 1930 by means of geologist Georgy Chernov. Georgy changed into the son of some other geologist, Alexander Chernov, who promoted the development of the Pechora coal basin, which included the Vorkuta fields.
With this discovery the coal mining industry started in the Komi ASSR. At the time simplest the southern components of the sector have been included in the Komi ASSR. The northern component, together with Vorkuta, belonged to the Nenets Autonomous Okrug of Arkhangelsk Oblast. In 1931 a geologist agreement became established by way of the coal area, with maximum of the people being inmates of the Ukhta-Pechora Camp of GULAG.
The origins of the city of Vorkuta are related to Vorkutlag, one of the more notorious compelled labour camps of the Gulag, which changed into mounted in 1932 with the begin of mining. It was the most important of the Gulag camps in European Russia and served as the administrative centre for a large range of smaller camps and subcamps, among them Kotlas, Pechora, and Izhma. The Vorkuta rebellion, a major rebellion through the camp inmates, passed off in 1953.
