Safonovo

Safonovo is a town and the managerial focal point of Safonovsky District in Smolensk Oblast, Russia, situated on the Vopets River 102 kilometers or 63 mi upper east of Smolensk, the authoritative focus of the oblast. The town of Safonovo was first made reference to in 1859. In 1918, it turned into the regulatory focus of Safonovskaya Volost, and since 1929 it filled in as the managerial focal point of Safonovsky District. During the 1930s, extensive stores of dark colored coal were found there. In 1938, the town was allowed urban-type settlement status, and in 1952—town status.
