Rostov on Don Cathedral
About Rostov on Don Cathedral
The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Theotokos is the main church of the city of Rostov-on-Don and the Orthodox Diocese of Rostov and Novocherkassk. It succeeded the Novocherkassk Cathedral as the principle place of Christian love in the Don locale. Toward the finish of the eighteenth century, after an extensive scale resettlement to rural areas of warriors, burghers and traders, the city specialists chose to assemble a sanctuary committed to the Navity of the Theotokos. It was intended to be developed in a similar suburb, close to the present-day Central market.
The congregation was established on February 20, 1781, and opened on September 5, 1781. Both the start of development works and opening of the congregation were sanctified by Archpriest Ioann Andreev. Be that as it may, just ten years after, on December 27, 1791, a lightning strike consumed the sanctuary. The chairman of the city M. Naumov, a shipper, requested of to Metropolitan Gavriil, who was the head of Ekaterinoslav Diocese and managed the region of Rostov on the development of the new church. In 1795 at a similar place started the development works of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin. In 1822 the congregation got house of prayer status on announcement of the Holy Synod.
