About Poronaysk
Poronaysk is a city and the place of work of Poronaysky District of Sakhalin Oblast, Russia, placed at the Poronay River 288 kilometers or 179 mi north of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. It became founded in 1869 as a Russian outpost Tikhmenevsky close to the Nivkh and Ainu settlements inside the area. The Treaty of Portsmouth transferred it to Japanese manipulate in conjunction with the rest of the southern half of the island of Sakhalin. It become renamed Shikuka, last underneath Japanese manipulate until the Soviet Army retook the whole of the island in 1945.
After the city were granted to the Soviet Union, it become named Poronaysk in 1946, after the river on which it stands. The river's name is from Ainu poro nay, which means Broad River, Big River, or Growing River. Poronaysk has a paper mill, in addition to timber and fishing industries. Sakhalinskaya GRES electricity station is provided with coal from an open reduce mine close to the city. The city lies at the island's railway community, in addition to on the main motorway connecting Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk with Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky.
