Petrozavodsk
About Petrozavodsk
Petrozavodsk is the capital town of the Republic of Karelia, Russia. Archeological discoveries inside the urban vicinity imply the presence of a settlement as a ways back as 7000 years ago, and at some stage in the Middle Ages the website of modern metropolis became marked by means of several lakeside villages. Within the metropolis limits, the district of Solomennoje seems in surviving data dating lower back to the 16th century, and a map produced through the Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius on the give up of that century places a agreement here called Onegaborg on the web page of contemporary Petrozavodsk.
On September 11, 1703, Prince Menshikov based the agreement of Petrovskaya Sloboda. He did so on the behest of Tsar Peter the Great, who wanted a brand new iron foundry to manufacture cannons and anchors for the Baltic Fleet on the time of the Great Northern War. At first the foundry used the name Shuysky zavod, but a decade later it became Petrovsky zavod, after the name of the reigning monarch.
From this form the existing name of the town derives. By 1717, Petrovskaya Sloboda had grown into the biggest settlement in Karelia, with about 3,500 inhabitants, a wooden citadel, a protected marketplace, and miniature palaces of the Tsar and Menshikov. The metropolis's satisfactory-recognised landmark have become the timber church of Saints Peter and Paul, rebuilt in 1772 and renovated in 1789. The church retained its authentic iconostasis until this relic of Peter's reign turned into destroyed through fireplace on October 30, 1924.
