About Pechory
Pechory is a city and the workplace of Pechorsky District in Pskov Oblast, Russia. Its population in the 2010 Census changed into 11,195, having fallen from 13,056 recorded inside the 2002 Census and 11,935 inside the 1989 Census. This population includes some hundred ethnic Estonians. Pechory was based as a posad in the 16th century close to the Pskov-Caves Monastery established in 1473 by way of orthodox priest Jonah that fled Dorpat for Pskovian mainland.
Its call, Pechory, or earlier Pechery derives from the phrase "peschery", Russian for the caves. The website online soon evolved into an essential trading post and border stronghold. The fortification of Pechory became besieged by Swedes within the course of the Great Northern War in 1701 and 1703. In 1701, after an unsuccessful assault of the Swedes led by Shlippenbach, Boris Sheremetev commenced his campaign of advancing in Swedish Estonia from Pechory. After the war the border of Russia become shifted Westwards so Pechory misplaced its military significance.
