Olonets

Olonets is a metropolis and the administrative center of Olonetsky District of the Republic of Karelia, Russia. Olonets is the oldest documented agreement in Karelia, stated via Novgorodian sources as early as 1137. Its records is obscure till 1649, while a castle modified into built there to guard the Grand Duchy of Moscow against the Swedes. The equal year it become granted city privileges. Until the Great Northern War, Olonets developed as a chief market for Russian trade with Sweden.

To the south from the town, there sprawled a belt of fortified abbeys, of which the Alexander-Svirsky Monastery emerge as the most vital. In the 18th century, Olonets' significance shifted from alternate to ironworking industries. In 1773, it became made the seat of Olonets Governorate. 11 years later, but, the seat have become moved to Petrozavodsk and Olonets commenced to say no. Modern Olonets is classed as a historic town of the Republic of Karelia and is the handiest city in the republic in which Karelians are in majority.
