Novosibirsk is the third-most populous city in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is the most crowded city in Asian Russia, with a populace of 1,473,754 as of the 2010 Census, and is the regulatory focal point of Novosibirsk Oblast and also of the Siberian Federal District. The city is situated in the southwestern piece of Siberia on the banks of the Ob River adjoining the Ob River Valley, close to the extensive water supply framed by the dam of the Novosibirsk Hydro Power Plant. It is part into ten areas and possesses a zone of 502.1 square kilometers 193.9 sq mi.
It is around 2,800 kilometers 1,700 mi east from Moscow, 600 kilometers 370 mi east from Omsk, 1,400 kilometers 870 mi east from Yekaterinburg, and 645 kilometers 401 mi west of Krasnoyarsk. Novosibirsk, established in 189316 at the future site of a Trans-Siberian Railway connect crossing the immense Siberian stream of Ob, first was named Novonikolayevsk in respect both of Saint Nicholas and of the supreme Tsar Nicholas II. It superseded close-by Krivoshchekovskaya town, which was established in 1696. The extension was finished in the spring of 1897, making the new settlement the territorial transport center point.
