Nevel

Nevel is a city and the place of work of Nevelsky District in Pskov Oblast, Russia, located on Lake Nevel 242 kilometers southeast of Pskov, the place of work of the oblast. It became first cited in Ivan the Terrible's will amongst cities that had been based throughout his reign. Between 1580 and 1772, it regularly modified ownership. In 1623, it became granted Magdeburg rights by the Polish King Wladysław IV Vasa. While part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth it became positioned inside the Połock Voivodeship.

It ultimately exceeded to Russia at some point of the First Partition of Poland in 1772, while it was included into newly mounted Pskov Governorate, chartered,and made the seat of Nevesky Uyezd of Pskov Governorate. In 1777, it become transferred to Polotsk Viceroyalty. In 1796, the viceroyalty became abolished and Nevel become transferred to Belarus Governorate; it have been part of Vitebsk Governorate given that 1802. Nevel become occupied by German troops. On August 22, 1944, the district turned into transferred to newly installed Velikiye Luki Oblast.

On October 2, 1957, Velikiye Luki Oblast was abolished and Nevelsky District become transferred to Pskov Oblast. In early 1919 it turned into part of the Socialist Soviet Republic of Byelorussia. After 1919, Vitebsk Governorate became part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. On March 24, 1924, Vitebsk Governorate become abolished, and Nevel became transferred to Pskov Governorate. On August 1, 1927, the uyezds and governorates were abolished and Nevelsky District, with the workplace in Nevel, become established as part of Velikiye Luki Okrug of Leningrad Oblast.
