About Mamonovo
Mamonovo, before 1945 known by its German name Heiligenbeil, is a town in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. Under the Teutonic Knights Heiligenstadt was worked almost an Old Prussian settlement. It was later renamed Heiligenbeil after a sacred hatchet utilized by Augustinian priests, built up in the region by Grand Master Winrich von Kniprode after the Battle of Rudau, to chop down an oak tree adored by agnostic Prussians. It went under the bishoric Warmia, at that point to the domain of Natangia. As a major aspect of the Kingdom of Prussia and Germany it was the area of East Prussia.
Towards the end World War II in furious battling among January and March 1945 the Heiligenbeil take tumbled to the Red Army. It was caught by Red Army on March 26, 1945 and was before long coordinated into the Kaliningrad Oblast. It took its present name in 1946. The guarding fourth Army's chronicles were covered in a timberland close to the town and found in 2004, in a region still covered with garbage from the last fights.
