About Igarka
Igarka is a town in Turukhansky District of Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, found 163 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Igarka was established in 1929 as a sawmill and a timber-trading port. It was allowed town status in 1931. From 1949 to 1953, the Salekhard– Igarka Railway venture made an unsuccessful endeavor to interface Igarka to the Russian railroad organize at Salekhard, killing a great many Gulag prisoners. During the extraditions of 1948-1951 a large number of regular people were expelled to Igarka from recently possessed regions of USSR.
In that period some 5,000-10,000 Lithuanians alone were strongly moved here from their country. Around 1,000 of them passed on there from the cool and poor conditions in the winter of 1948-49. The town is a port on the Yenisei River and is found 673 kilometers from the waterway's mouth. It is served by the Igarka Airport whose area on an island amidst the stream makes get to troublesome when the water is somewhat defrosted: in winter one can drive over, and in summer there is a watercraft association however in the middle of those seasons crossing is troublesome.
